As a consumer of music I am a split personality. I am both a satisficer and a maximiser. For over forty five years years my addiction has been rock music of the 1970s and 1960s. I am still on an endless quest to hear all the best there is and the journey still thrills me after hearing many thousands of albums.
In 2011 I created a website centred around my list of 999 songs. There you could find the 999 songs for the music satisficer in me. 999 songs that touched something very deep in me.
It was not an un-impartial and subjective list. You could see a lot that might have been familiar and a lot that may not have been familiar.
In alphabetical order, that was today’s list, when today was fourteen years ago.
In 2025 I updated the list, with a number os the same songs and many different songs here you will find the original 999 songs and here you will find the 2025 999 songs
The songs, unless otherwise noted are the original recordings by the listed artists. There is nothing on the lists recorded after 1975. There have been innovations since and there has been a lot of great music, but 1965 to 1975 were 10 years of unparalleled musical exploration and remain beacons to us all.
If you’ve read the lists I’d be very interested to hear what your 1000th song would be. If you like my taste then you would probably enjoy my mixcloud podcast radioRAERONA revived
